Citylink Tulla Widening
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Carrying approximately 210,000 vehicles per day, Australia’s Citylink Tullamarine Corridor is one of Melbourne’s busiest freeways. To meet traffic demands, the roadway had to be widened, and the English Street Bridge needed to be replaced. Arcadis-WSP/PB Joint Venture performed design services, including those for the bridge replacement. The new bridge and freeway are expected to reduce congestion, increase capacity by 30 percent, and accommodate future growth.
The project team used ProjectWise to share and manage all data among multiple disciplines on a global scale. Engineers used MicroStation and OpenRoads to develop models allowing surveyors to optimize geometry layout and the construction team to accurately complete work on site. The 3D design technology facilitated clash detection, which helped the team to avoid rework. The collaborative BIM approach accelerated the design process, resulting in successful completion of the bridge one week ahead of schedule. This time savings reduced site and traffic management costs and limited the impacts of road closures.
